In this Derby then and now I'm standing on the pavement on the corner of Uttoxeter Old Road where it meets Parcel Terrace, I’m looking south towards Junction Street.
This is in the Rowditch area of Derby and at this junction three roads join with Uttoxeter Old Road, they are Parcel Terrace, Great Northern Road and Junction Street.
I can still remember taking the 2004 photograph even though it was 22 years ago, scary how time passes.
In my 2004 photograph you can see a building during its demolition, this was a Corn Mill built in 1862 it had a distinctive square chimney. In this photograph they are part way through taking that chimney down.
In the 1862 the miller was John Hill, by the 1870s it had become Mart & Sons.
In my 2026 photograph you can see "Junction Mill", a four story apartment block built in 2005 on the site of the cleared corn mill.
I bet this modern building won't last 142 years like the corn mill did !
Notice how the new building butts up against 61 Uttoxeter Old Road with just an entry to the back of the property, in 2004 there was an open yard in that part of the site, you can see its chimney in both views.
On the left side of the view is The Junction Tavern (owned by Admiral Taverns) closed in March 2020 and was converted into eight bedsits. The faux timber framing was added to it in 1979 by Marsdens Brewery. The pub was created from two Victorian terrace houses in 1869, named after the junction at the bottom of the road where I am standing.
There used to be a Baptist church and the AGA shop to the left of the Junction Tavern and a chippy to the right.
Opposite the Junction Tavern was The Great Northern pub until 2010, now also converted to housing.
Uttoxeter Old Road was laid out in 1819, Parcel Terrace in 1852, Great Northern Road was originally called Dog Kennel Lane, renamed in 1878 when the Friargate railway line was built.

Please note that the Then & now section on my website is currently in need of a revamp as they were all created back in 2005 using Flash and this is no longer supported so I will have to recreate all of my work again using a different method. In the meantime I'm publishing them on my YouTube channel like this one.
