Review #5 - Interphase by CastriX
This level is one of my favorite levels in the game. The design, colors and gameplay are absolutely stunning all the way through : this is going to be a positive review, although - like in every single level - there are a few issues here and there.
The first part, which goes from 0% to 12% introduces a large range of color and stunning designs. The amount of miniscule detail and small movements is impressive. The glow sets an atmosphere - although it is quite excessive in a few places, especially around the huge custom saws. The main issue with this part - which is, to be fair, quite hard to avoid with this amount of detail - is its slight messiness : you can see the glow beams clip through a few block designs in a weird way.
The next part is a bit different but still incredible. The designs, although not as detailed as in the first part, are just as impressive, keeping the great color variety. The background is very eye catching and suits the part perfectly.
Following this section, we have a very atmospheric part, thanks to the background and foreground elements. The only real issue there is that it's a bit hard to see some obstacles, although the sync helps doing the part correctly. Again, this part suffers from overlapping elements - arrows, foreground with background pillars.
The drop doesn't use as many colors, but is just as interesting because of how well executed they are. The usage of circular objects make the structures much more interesting than they would otherwise be, and custom elements such as the eyes add to the atmosphere and help the part feel alive - which is also done by the great amount of movements. This part, however, sometimes suffers from odd gameplay, the main examples being the three black orbs at 32%, the ship part at 35% or the orbs at 43%, which you need to hit very lightly to properly do the following ship part.
The next part is quite similar, using the same color range. The gameplay here is incredibly fun, using teleportation portals which are really underrated. The sort of snake at 52% as well as the pillars are absolutely incredible both in terms of detail but more importantly in terms of movements.
Moving on to the next part, which is very different from the rest, using contrasting colors - blue and red - which, by the way, look just as good. This part is incredibly detailed : it might be slightly excessive, although I don't have issues with it personally. The first background is quite underwhelming, it's basically scaled up default blocks. However, it changes fast to a very detailed and more fitting set of pillars. The gameplay is pretty fun, although it can get quite hard to see with the details and most importantly, the glow.
The last part, starting at 72% seems inspired by Xenomorphosis, but executed in a much better way, it's easily readable and very fun. The colors are just as stunning, while the designs are quite different from the rest, focusing on circular elements that rotate and move around each other.
Overall, Interphase is simply a masterpiece, showing incredible colors, designs, movements, and gameplay. The only issues come from its messiness in some places and some gameplay sections, although it's mostly very fun. This absolutely deserves an epic rating, although its massive object count might prevent it from obtaining it.

In terms of decoration, this has been my favorite insane demon ever since it came out. The atmosphere is simply brilliant and unlike anything I’ve seen before. It matches the song incredibly well, a song which is awesome in itself. I like the odd design and color choices as well as the structuring, those really contribute to giving this level its charm. I feel like the UFO and ball parts could’ve been more interesting, especially compared the first few parts, but this is nonetheless my favorite insane demon by a long shot in terms of decoration and atmosphere.
Also, I had to use the LDM so make sure to check out this level in full detail: https://youtu.be/CbGzD-GEAJU
The gameplay is also pretty fun. I admit that it’s very unbalanced, with 16-26% and 31-32% being miles harder than the rest of the level, but unbalanced doesn’t always mean bad. It was quite satisfying getting to 16% every single attempt and I had some windows of consistency where I would get past 32% very often. The gameplay itself in those parts is insanely hard while still being fun. The other parts are also amazing gameplay-wise, although there were some strange spots here and there; overall, I love the uniqueness of the gameplay.
I would say this is a high end insane demon, it definitely doesn’t reach extreme demon difficulty, but it’s very challenging and skill based even though it looks like it would be more reliant on memory.

Honestly one of the most fun levels I’ve ever played, the sync is almost perfect and the gameplay itself is incredible. It also looks really good for its time, and I think it’s Knobbelboy’s best level. I don’t think it’s an insane demon, though : it took me around 30 minutes and just 250 attempts (200 of the attempts shown at the end are really old and didn’t help me beat the level at all, so I don’t count those). I think it’s a hard demon or maybe even a medium although I probably just got very lucky. Awesome level :)

Basically, this is a hard demon except there’s a sonic wave part in the middle of it. It makes it incredibly unbalanced but overall it’s still pretty fun. This progress doesn’t really mean anything, the part I died to is incredibly hard and I expect well over a 100 deaths past 60 before I’m able to get anywhere. I’ll try my best to beat it, and hopefully that will make it my first rated extreme demon! By the way, learning the whole level and getting this run took me about 700 attempts. New attempt record for an insane demon! As you can see at the end of the video, I have 155 old attempts, thats just me from 4 years ago trying to get to the drop with Deadlocked as my hardest demon (didnt go well).
An incredibly fun level, everything seems pretty fair and balanced. Really enjoying the 144hz ship physics, especially for this level since it has a lot of tight flying sections. I definitely recommend this!

Overall, this level’s decoration is pretty good. It features your typical eye-candy colors reminiscent of Goose, and while those aren’t very interesting, they look good so I’m not complaining. I really enjoyed the intensity of this level, I believe Yakimaru was able to represent the song very well here considering how intense Aura is. That being said, it kind of felt messy as a whole and I thought it could’ve been polished a bit better, but it’s not that big of an issue. Note that I used the LDM.
In terms of gameplay, I absolutely loved this. I think it’s extremely satisfying to learn and to play; fast, learny gameplay requiring many inputs is something I’ve always really, really enjoyed so this level is perfect for me. Nothing in this level annoyed me in the slightest, and overall I think the balancing is pretty good.
My experience with this was awesome as well, and I believe I got pretty lucky with only one death in the second half. I made sure to practice this a lot so that it didn’t take me long from 0, which worked pretty well. Great level, I definitely recommend it!
