The vast majority of human microbiome research has focused on Western populations, leaving a significant gap in our understanding of global health. How does the gut microbiome of a healthy Vietnamese adult differ, and what can it teach us? At PacBio PRISM 2025 in Danang, Thuy Duong Ho Huynh of KTest presents a foundational study of the gut microbiome in healthy Vietnamese adults, an underrepresented population in global databases.
Using shotgun metagenomics, this research provides a high-resolution view of the structure, function, and health relevance of this distinct cohort. Discover the 14 core species that form the foundation of the Vietnamese gut microbiome and learn how individuals can be classified into three distinct enterotypes: Bacteroides, Prevotella, and Blautia. The talk also explores the unique metabolic pathways associated with each enterotype and demonstrates the application of the Gut Microbiome Wellness Index (GMWI) to confirm the cohort's health status and the index's potential as a robust health indicator for the region.
