Research impact is loosely defined as how broadly scholarly research is being read, discussed, and used both inside and outside of the academy. Metrics tools are firmly established in the Sciences, but they are not designed to capture the impact of Humanities research. This talk will review the evidence base for citation-based and alternative research impact metrics for the Humanities (HuMetricsHSS and Metrics Toolkit), and will offer an opportunity to investigate and challenge the biases of Anglophone and science-based ranking systems.

Heather Coates is the Digital Scholarship and Data Management Librarian at the IUPUI University Library Center for Digital Scholarship. At University Library, she coordinates research data services and research metrics services to support faculty success in research and career advancement. In the role of Indiana University Data Steward for Research Data, she develops policy, processes, and resources to facilitate responsible stewardship of research data throughout the IU system. As an open research advocate, she cares deeply about the integrity, accessibility, and sustainability of the scholarly record as a public good. She is dedicated to promoting more equitable research evaluation practices in higher education.
