Decision paralysis can quietly wreck an old-school session. You hit three doors, a weird statue, a staircase… and suddenly the table turns into a committee meeting. In OSR-style play, that hesitation has a cost: torches burn down, noise travels, and wandering monsters don’t wait for you to finish debating.
In this video, I’m talking player-to-player about how to break the freeze and keep the game moving without playing reckless. We’ll cover practical table fixes that work in real dungeons: defaulting to action, using “good enough” decisions, turning scouting into a procedure (not an argument), assigning roles like caller/scout/mapper, using a simple 60-second rule, and making decisions by risk category instead of trying to predict exact outcomes.
Includes a quick example at the T-intersection, plus a reminder of the Dungeon Clock: time is always ticking.

![Every D&D Edition Ranked: Where We Lost the Plot!
The big one. Pull up a stool. We arent just ranking these editions by what’s fun—fun is subjective. We’re ranking them by Referee utility. If I’m sitting in the chair, and I’ve got three hours to give my players a world-class adventure, which of these books is my best friend, and which one is an anchor around my neck?
We’re doing the grand tour. We’re dissecting the philosophy of each era to see how D&D moved from a toolkit for Referees to a curated experience for players—and why that shift matters at your table. We cover:
[00:02] - Introduction: Ranking every edition based on referee support.
[01:28] - #10: 4th Edition (2008) - A tactical board game that failed miserably as an adventure game.
[02:17] - #9: 3rd Edition / 3.5 (2000) - The birth of build culture and high-prep disasters.
[03:08] - #8: 5.5 / 2024 Revision - D&D as a service that adds buttons without solving procedures.
[03:58] - #7: 5th Edition (2014) - The t-shirt of D&D: fits everyone, but lacks danger and clear rules.
[04:51] - #6: AD&D 2nd Edition (1989) - Great settings, but timid rules that sanded off the cool parts.
[06:32] - #5: OD&D (1974) - The White Box kit: high on soul, but hard to run straight out of the box.
[07:22] - #4: Holmes Basic (1977) - The quirky, psychedelic bridge between the 70s and 80s.
[08:13] - #3: AD&D 1st Edition (1978) - The atmosphere king and a beautiful mess of Gygaxian prose.
[09:29] - #2: BECMI / Rules Encyclopedia - The desert island book: a complete, nearly perfect progression.
[10:46] - #1: B/X D&D (1981) - The Gold Standard: perfect procedures and honest, fast-paced gameplay.
[12:44] - Closing thoughts and community thank yous.
This isnt nostalgia; its a mechanical analysis of the game loop. If you want a system that stays out of your way and lets you actually play, this is the conversation you need to hear.
The Tavern Rules: We’re here for B/X and OSR gaming. I use AI as a tool to help organize and format my notes, but every ruling and opinion is 100% Tenkar. Keep it civil, keep it old-school, or the bouncer will show you the door.
