Tonight we mark the 82nd anniversary of D-Day with a special commemorative flight recreating one of the most important airborne operations of World War II — Mission Albany.
Flying the legendary Douglas DC-3/C-47 Skytrain, we retrace the route flown by the transport crews carrying the paratroopers of the US 101st Airborne Division into Normandy during the early hours of 6 June 1944. Before the first troops landed on Utah and Omaha beaches, thousands of airborne soldiers were already fighting deep behind enemy lines.
Throughout the flight we'll explore the planning of Operation Overlord, the extensive deception campaigns that fooled the Germans, the role of the pathfinders, the weather forecast that nearly delayed the invasion, and the remarkable bravery of the pilots and paratroopers who flew into darkness, flak, and uncertainty.
We'll also tell the stories of the men of the 101st Airborne, Easy Company, Sainte-Mère-Église, and the scattered drops that ultimately helped secure the invasion's success and begin the liberation of Europe.

About the Flight – Mission Albany
Mission Albany was the first major airborne assault of D-Day.
Shortly after midnight on 6 June 1944, hundreds of C-47 Skytrains crossed the English Channel carrying paratroopers of the US 101st Airborne Division. Their mission was to secure vital roads, bridges, causeways, and defensive positions behind Utah Beach before the amphibious landings began.
Faced with darkness, poor weather, anti-aircraft fire, and navigation challenges, many formations became scattered. Yet despite the confusion, the airborne troops adapted, regrouped, and achieved many of their objectives through initiative, determination, and extraordinary courage.
Their actions played a critical role in the success of the Normandy landings and the eventual liberation of Western Europe.
Tonight we remember those aircrews and paratroopers who took part in one of history's most important military operations.
