Day 3 of Rocky Mountain Race Week 2026 is the BIG one — 572 miles from
Kearney, Nebraska all the way to Pueblo, Colorado. No track time today.
Just the open road, 3 rain storms, a near-miss with golf ball hail,
a surprise police sticker in Fort Morgan, and a stop at Mark Williams
Enterprises that we did NOT plan on.

After two nights of racing in Great Bend, KS and Kearney, NE, Day 3 of
the drag and drive is a 572-mile haul through Nebraska and Colorado to
get to Pueblo for Days 4 and 5 of Rocky Mountain Race Week 2026.
Here's what happened:
The 1964 Chevelle is running a 454 Big Block with no overdrive — 10 to
11 MPG at 62 MPH, 2,700 RPM, and a 24-gallon tank that means fuel stops
every 200 miles max. We ran into rain within the first hour. Then again.
Then a third time. Good thing we built that foul weather air cleaner
setup for the race filter.
In Fort Morgan, Colorado, we ran a little hot idling through town and
pulled under a tree to cool down. Turned out a Fort Morgan PD officer
stopped to check on us — and ended up being a car guy who wanted to
know what Rocky Mountain Race Week was all about. He got a full
explanation of the drag and drive route AND gave us our first police
sticker of the event.
Outside Wiggins, Colorado — 30 minutes ahead on the route, golf
ball-sized hail was reported. We stuffed the Chevelle under a canopy
at a vacant business and had chicken enchiladas at the Mexican joint
next door while the storm passed. That's race week problem solving.
Checkpoint 4 was Mark Williams Enterprises — a legendary name in
high-performance driveline parts. Modular housings rated to 4,000
horsepower, bonded aluminum drive shafts, gun-drilled axles, shot
peening, in-house heat treat. These guys do it all and have been
doing it since 1964.
Then came the mountain drive — in the dark. Central City, Colorado
at 8,400 feet of elevation, 50°F, and the 454 Big Block running
rich because we tuned the carb at 1,200 ft back home. We used a
pump sprayer on the radiator for the entire climb to keep temps at
200°F — it worked. Barely.
Arrived in Pueblo well after midnight. Track goes live tomorrow.
The carburetor needs jets. The radiator needs to be bigger. And we've
got two days of Pueblo racing ahead.
