Federal Commercial Crime director Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa says dating apps must strengthen identity verification to prevent syndicates from exploiting fake profiles.
He proposed multi‑layer checks, live facial verification and alerts for suspicious communication patterns.
But he warned verification alone is not enough, as scammers adapt with stolen identities and quickly move conversations to other platforms.
He called for a whole‑ecosystem approach involving enforcement agencies, financial institutions, telecoms and society.
Cybersecurity experts say mandatory facial verification and multi‑layer authentication could raise barriers for syndicates, but must be paired with transaction safeguards, behavioural detection and real‑time monitoring.
Criminologists argue Malaysia should enforce a mandatory online safety code overseen by MCMC, with AI‑powered risk alerts, verified badges and stronger mechanisms to identify repeat offenders.
Experts stress public education is vital, urging campaigns to remind users never to send money or share intimate images with strangers online.
