A dangerous train ride in Sri Lanka from Nawaru Eliya to Ella.
The British-era Main Line was built as a conduit for Sri Lanka’s export of Ceylon tea.
This is Sri Lanka’s most beautiful train ride:
The journey from Kandy to Badulla takes 7 to 8 hours and goes through Sri Lanka’s tea country. The train ride passes plantations that go through beautiful hilly green landscapes. Canna bushes and lemongrass provide an ornamental trim around the edges. You will see tea pickers in saris. Take your turn hanging out of one of the open train doorways as the train speeds along the track.
The final stage from Ella to Badulla is the most dramatic part of the journey. You will get to see amazing feats of 19th-century engineering that carry the train across valleys and over ravines and past water falls.
Just north of Ella, the railroad tracks curve over the brick-and-stone Nine Arch Bridge. Then the train tackles the Demodara Loop, where the line circles over a hilltop and then passes back again under itself. Many travelers end the journey at Ella and hike to different points around the bridge for one of Sri Lanka’s most popular photographic opportunities.
