Vultures at Panna Tiger Reserve in India.
For over a thousand years, hundreds of vultures have built their nests on the steep, gorges of Panna.
India is home to around 9 different species of vultures, but to a rapid population collapse in recent years, most of these vultures are now facing extinction. The dramatic vulture decline seen across India presents a range of ecological threats.
Many conservation plans are in place to help assist in the recovery of the vulture population, their protection and conservation. One of India’s biggest natural parks is PTR (the Panna Tiger Reserve). It is located in Madhya Pradesh.
Around 650 vultures of 6 species were reported at Panna Tiger Reserve in the year 2018. Out of these, 4 were local resident species and 3 were migratory.
There are 9 species of vultures in India.
1. Oriental White-backed Vulture
2. Long-billed Vulture
3. Egyptian Vulture
4. Indian Griffon Vulture
5. Himalayan Griffon
6. Cinereous Vulture
7. Slender-billed Vulture
8. Red Headed Vulture
9. Bearded Vulture or Lammergeier.
The first six of those 9 are found in the Panna Tiger Reserve, including the endangered White-backed Vulture and Long-billed Vulture.
In order to study the movements and habits of the vultures, the Panna Tiger Reserve came up with the decision of radio tagging the vultures in the park. Since the catastrophic decline in the vulture population in the past few years, telemetry-based research has become important for understanding the migratory pattern of the Vultures. They also study their roosts, nests, foraging, bathing and other behaviors of the vultures in order to understand everything that is crucial for their conservation.
Vultures died in large numbers in the 1990s because they ingested the veterinary drug named Diclofenac. Diclofenac found in cattle carcasses. Cattle farms use the drug Diclofenac as an anti-inflammatory for their animals.
Experts have stated that by stopping the use of Diclofenac they can bring vultures back in India.
