What's more dangerous than exploring an abandoned mine? Exploring a flooded abandoned mine! Despite that, I recently met up with Justin from the Southern New Mexico Explorer YouTube channel and ventured into the flooded Oak Creek Mine that he had located high up in the mountains. Justin had recently explored only the first 1200 feet of this former (and now water-filled) gold and silver mine by himself before wisely turning around when the water became waist-deep. I was intrigued with his trip report and findings, so we decided to join forces and go even further into the flooded mine to document what was there.

The Oak Creek Mine was originally dug in the late 1800s and early 1900s and was reported to be 10,000 feet long (3048 m). Based on old mining reports I researched, it seems this mine had a dual purpose -- it served as both a drainage tunnel AND a haulage tunnel for many of the nearby, massive mines in the district. That explains its incredible length of almost two miles. In both Part 1 and Part 2 of my videos, I'm going to take you 3000 feet into this flooded mine and show you some of the things Justin and I found along the way. These include some interesting miners' graffiti and drawings, a piece of un-exploded dynamite in a drill hole, underground waterfalls, pipe fittings, our oxygen meters sounding an alarm, and much more.
