The funny thing is- we were going to explore this abandoned mine just to essentially "get it over and done with" because we assumed that the inclined shaft we would enter would just lead to an impasse at a vertical shaft. Needless to say, it led to much more than we expected!
The origins of this mine date back to 1897, mining lead, zinc, and silver sporadically until 1957.

Todd and Joe took the classy route- bringing kayaks along and kayaking underground until the water level became too shallow. Myself, on the other hand- I took the swamp man approach and trudged through the slippery, quicksand-like mud with my trusty waders.
Inside of this old, dark, and damp underground mine are cave formations developing from 100 years of water depositing dissolved minerals, historic items, century-old graffiti, and a bit of mystery.
Join us underground, exploring over a mile of abandoned tunnels left behind from over a century ago from hard work, hope, and guts.

Today's abandoned mine exploring video is part 4 of possibly the LARGEST accessible abandoned mine in New Mexico! I've conducted many abandoned mine exploration trips across the desert southwest, but in terms of size, this is the largest I have experienced to date. In many areas, the underground scenery resembles a massive cave system. This is truly one of the most interesting abandoned places near me that I have explored!
In part 4, we begin our underground hiking adventure revisiting the experimental bunkers, then head towards the northern cavernous open spaces left behind from mining operations. Valuable minerals were extracted over a span of more than 80 years, so tens of thousands of tons of material were removed from the interior of the mountain! We encounter another vintage ore car, exceptional mineral specimens, explosives, and underground chambers that could possibly host a concert!
History of this mine is rather colorful. It started in the early 1900s as an underground lead, zinc, and silver mine. In its later days, it became a test site for experimenting with underground munitions storage and the effects of explosives detonating in that setting. It is part of a massive and elaborate network of an underground ore zone that spans for several miles under the mountain.
This mine is so massive, we have made several trips to it, and still are discovering new areas! This video is the fourth of many documenting this astonishing man-made cavern with sights resembling scenes from cave exploring videos!

As we retrace our steps to find new leads that gain access to unexplored areas of the mine, we are successful on discovering a sublevels that run in between several main levels. We discover a vintage ore car, in-tact windlass, and a massive stope laden with colorful minerals and countless timber support beams ("stulls"). My persistent curiosity, and lack of communication ability (our radios could not penetrate the rock in this area) caused a 2-hour cat-and-mouse chase- Todd, Joe, and Lewis were trying to rendezvous back with myself, while I was trying to do the same from a different level, and direction. We eventually were able to link back up, both parties worried, but glad each were safe. From that point forward, there are always a well-understood rendezvous plan and other means of communication, other than radios or verbal.
This series catalogues miles of underground workings that connect with many adjacent mines in the area, along with endless historical graffiti, the most elaborately timbered hoist room, ore cars, drills, windlasses, and even miner's garments. We get to explore five of the many levels in this mine, all of them extensive! If you haven't seen parts 1 through 4, you're missing out. This abandoned mine is truly an amazing place!

My youngest son, Mark, was eager to come along with me on an abandoned mine exploring trip, but I had not envisioned the extreme ground situation we would encounter entering this historic abandoned mine. Production of lead, zinc, and silver began here in 1878, and was mined until the 1950s. A major earthquake in 1906 rocked New Mexico, and could be felt in locations over 500 miles away in Texas and Arizona. This earthquake caused fault slippage in this mine along the dip of the vein, causing the hanging wall (in this case, the roof of the mine) to shift to the west, and drop 3 feet. This caused some drift tunnels to become as tall as 3 feet in some areas. What is astounding is that the miners still kept mining, using the now shorter drifts! You will see that the miners shaved off sections of the shifted posts to allow for mine cars to clear them! We eventually arrive in a large stope that was littered with boulders the size of large vehicles, likely caused from that major earthquake. This mine is part of a network of interconnected underground workings that span over 30 miles! There is so much more to explore here, but I have to admit, abandoning this abandoned mine exploration was probably the better choice we made... for now.
Joining us once again on this adventure is @ZiaMountainAdventures, along with their friend (and now my new friend) Joe, a 10-year SAR volunteer with vast amounts of knowledge on rope work. This abandoned mine was a challenging one to access and exit. We rappelled down a wide-open void 100 vertical feet down to the upper levels and stopes in this locally-famous abandoned mine. Inside, we were able to hike down large stopes and underground caves to a depth of 300 vertical feet below the surface from our entry point!
This two-part series catalogues thousands of feet of underground workings that connect with natural caves. There is a particular cave named the "Crystal Cave" that was documented in the 1880s as "...so spectacular, it became an immediate public attraction and overnight sensation." This cave contained elaborate formations from chalcedony, calcite, calcium carbonate, and tinted with colors from silver, lead, and copper ores. The miners name the formations the "Silver Forest," "Cleveland, Grant, Garfield, and Arthur" (after U.S. Presidents), and the "Sleeping Lamb." We have yet to rediscover this cave (as it was destroyed during the mining process), and it is at a lower level that we have yet to reach.
Part 1 shares a point of interest on the surface, initial entry into the mine, the upper level with its stopes, and an intersection with a natural cave.
Part 2 will show a Wulfenite deposit, a 450-foot-deep underground chasm with a decrepit wooden bridge crossing, and some mysterious items (like a door that belongs on a ship) that you don't usually see in mines!

As we inch higher into the upper workings of the Lost Treasure Mine, and deeper into the mountain, we arrive at some of the workings that originated from the mine's beginnings. Much of this level is part of a stope that is in some bad ground. There are slabs of limestone the size of full-sized sedans that were dislodged from the back of this underground void! An unexpected surprise- We eventually encounter daylight and arrive on the surface, on the other side of the mountain! We may have traveled several miles underground to end up where we did, and it was a much more comfortable situation hiking down a mountain rather than descending near-vertical ladder ways to get back to our staging point!
This four-part series catalogues miles of underground workings that connect with many adjacent mines in the area, along with endless historical graffiti, the most elaborately timbered hoist room, ore cars, drills, windlasses, and even miner's garments. Today's abandoned mine exploring video is part 3 of possibly the LARGEST accessible abandoned mine in New Mexico! I've conducted many abandoned mine exploration trips across the desert southwest, but in terms of size, this is the largest I have experienced to date. In many areas, the underground scenery resembles a massive cave system. This is truly one of the most interesting abandoned places near me that I have explored!
In part 3, we begin our underground hiking adventure in the clouds- underground clouds. We intersect a 300-foot vertical passage that connects with another massive, flooded abandoned mine that enters the mountain nearly a mile away. After leaving the underground clouds, we begin a lengthy hike through several historic tunnels that accessed the cavernous open spaces left behind from the valuable minerals being extracted over a span of more than 80 years! We encounter a vintage hoist, ore car remains, another interesting trackway that declines into the mountain, explosives, another massive set of underground chambers, and an experimental bunker!
This video is the third of many documenting this astonishing man-made cavern with sights resembling scenes from cave exploring videos!

I've conducted many abandoned mine exploration trips across the desert southwest, but in terms of size, this is the largest I have experienced to date. In many areas, the underground scenery resembles a massive cave system. This is truly one of the most interesting abandoned places near me that I have explored!
In part 2, we enter where the main ore body used to be. After the valuable minerals were extracted, massive stopes were left behind, leaving an underground void that is a sight to see! After traveling for several thousand feet, we encounter an underground weather system where clouds are forming and moisture precipitating from condensation. This is obviously not good for any iron or steel implements within the mine, as much of it is severely oxidized. We also come across a unique system of cave formations actively growing within one of the stopes in the clouds, where minerals within the mountains are leeching into the formations, creating colorful soda straws and stalactites!

This exploration focuses on a path to find an underground mule stable which was used during its early legacy period. Mules during the early era of this abandoned mine were used to haul ore car loads to the surface, long before powered trammers.
Joining us on this adventure are @ZiaMountainAdventures and @Porty1119. Together, we descend down an inclined winze that has an ominous "Bad Air" label and a challenging obstacle to navigate through to get to the bottom. To get to the stable area, we then have to ascend a different inclined winze-stope to reach the original level where we entered this abandoned mine to circumnavigate a collapse that prevented us from reaching this area.

@ZiaMountainAdventures and Abandoned Underground team up again, along with Mrs. Zia Mountain Adventures and Mrs. Abandoned Underground to explore a massive, dangerous and flooded abandoned mine. This mine's distance is unknown because we ran out of time to finish exploring it! The haulage adit pierces into the mountain for at least a half of a mile, and several drifts branch off into different directions. Kenny, Mrs. ZMA and Mrs. A/U stayed on the surface for emergency support on this one (they made the smart decision).
What do I mean by dangerous? Prior to our visit, Porty 11-19 from @Porty1119 had given me a serious warning on not to enter a particular tunnel in this mining district we were visiting due to the severe danger inside. Unknown to us at the time, the abandoned mine in this video is the tunnel he was talking about. It is riddled with severely rotten timber supports, bad ground, cave ins, and flooding. I always trust Porty’s input on things like this because he is a mining professional that has an encyclopedia of knowledge on mines- both operating and abandoned.
Disclaimer: With the information in the preceding paragraph, I must warn any viewer to not attempt, replicate, reproduce, or imitate what is seen in this video. This is a dangerous place, and in hindsight, I realized I did some dangerous things. I had to resort to yelling in some bad ground areas to communicate since one of the radios was left on the surface- bad decision. Navigating through a lattice of rotting wood and loose debris- bad decision. It is not worth the risk of being crushed, or buried alive to satisfy curiosity.
You may ask- "Why Chasing Questionable Ghosts?" There are 2 odd events that manifest in this abandoned mine deep within the mountain: 1- a low rumbling noise coming out of an endless drift (11:20), and 2- a glowing light appears several hundred feet from where I stood (13:42). I'll save you the time reading on what my theories are regarding these events, as they are highlighted in the video. I will tell you this- they are reasonable theories, but I couldn't prove them. Who doesn't love a little mystery, and what's more mysterious than ghosts?

The abandoned mine we explore underground highlights a 400 foot-long adit that follows along a fluorite vein that is now an open stope, at some points, 20 feet wide. There are many bats currently residing inside, and in some areas, the odor of guano is overwhelming. There are some very interesting pieces of geology on the surface and underground in this one! I hope you enjoy!
On a side note, getting to this abandoned mine and back isn't terribly difficult hiking (in ideal weather). Perhaps one with an extremely capable, highly modified off-road vehicle could drive up to the mine, as many have done so in the past. I had knowledge that the derelict mining roads leading to this district have been destroyed from erosion over the many decades of rain and being abandoned, and a 4-wheel drive vehicle simply wouldn't succeed. With that being said, I decided to take along my brother's ATV to substitute the hiking in the interest of time. Unfortunately, the ATV option did not work out due to severe rock slides in one section ascending out of a canyon, and we reverted back to hiking 2.5 miles up to the mine.
Point being, I was not prepared for the hike and suffered from severe dehydration and possibly on the verge of heat stroke! I had at most- 3 hours of sleep the night before, and didn't drink enough water that night. I always carry 3 liters of water when I know a hike is not very far. This time it wasn't enough. The high temperature around 3 pm (when we were returning) was at 95 degrees. Not too bad, right? The anomaly was that the humidity was above normal for the desert ( about 60%), the wind was calm, and there was absolutely no shade. All of those factors in combination led to severe cramping starting from my calves, to my thighs, all of the way up to my jaw. It felt like I was being zapped with a taser at times, a very unpleasant and scary experience. Kenny and Todd didn't experience such symptoms as I, but those weather conditions did not favor them as well. In the end, I did make it to a local store and drank plenty of electrolyte beverages to get me home.

I learned a valuable lesson on this trip- don't get complacent because a plan worked before. Always prepare and carry more supplies than you need. It may be an inconvenience due to weight, but as the adage states- "It's better to have it and not need it, rather than to need it and not have it."
Don't do this kind of thing without the proper knowledge, equipment, or experience!

It appeared someone had been here shortly before I arrived, but there is only one road in and out? The road in skirts the perimeter of a volcanic lava flow, and the road is becoming overgrown with thorny mesquite bushes. It's also in a very isolated location. This probably explains the lack of vandalism.
All in all, this is a bizarre place that has miscellaneous items like abandoned vehicles, hand-painted pictures, a basement, and a dummy propped in a chair to make it appear that someone is inside. This place is near the U.S. and Mexico border, so it is plausible that migrants or smugglers do stop here for shelter...

We initially thought we completed a full exploration of this mine, but as I studied the map further after I got back from this place, we missed A LOT! I figure we may have to return to finish this place out at a later time. I'll keep you updated, thanks for watching, and please subscribe!

There's a bunch of colorful graffiti covering the exterior and interior walls of this place, so it's no secret of its existence. Many people that live in this area know about it, but there hasn't been a video about it posted (to my knowledge). It's something short and sweet, but I thought it was a unique experience to go inside a place that many haven't had the chance to experience.
I will get back out to some more abandoned mines and other abandoned places soon!
Thanks for watching!
