Daily brief for August 31, 2026.
Fighting around Iran picked back up after a quieter stretch. Reports over the weekend include U.S. strikes on launchers at Larak Island inside the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian missile fire toward U.S.-linked bases in Jordan. Officials had just said the shipping lanes were cleared of mines. Traffic through the strait is still far below normal, so “cleared” and “fully flowing” are not the same thing.
On the energy side, Washington is working a deal for longer-term access to Venezuelan crude, including talk of using some of that oil to refill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. That can help later. It does not refill tanks this week.
Supply-chain ripples are the piece most people will feel first: tankers already at sea take weeks to arrive, then there is a gap behind them. Watch fuel, diesel, fertilizer, and grocery prices more than headlines. Plan, don’t panic. Combine trips, buy what you actually use, keep emergency cash, and stay current on travel.
