Thursday night look at the August 12 USDA Crop Production and WASDE reports.
Key numbers: • Corn yield cut to 180.7 bu/acre (down from 183)
• Corn production still second-largest on record at 16.013 billion bushels thanks to higher acres
• Corn ending stocks cut more than expected to 1.653 billion bushels
• Soybean yield trimmed but production hits a record on higher planted acres
• Wheat production edged lower
Weather stress (heat/drought in the western Midwest and excess rain farther east) pulled yields down, but extra planted acres limited the damage to total production. The sharper corn stocks cut is the number markets are watching most closely.
