CXC 2022: Reflecting on the CXC Discord – Making Communities Where People Feel Seen
Are online communities doomed to be rivalrous, tribal places where accuse and abuse are the favored verbs? Or is it still possible to foster inclusive, accessible, and supportive spaces for creative people to interact? And even if you can, how do you keep it going, especially given the irregular schedules a creative life often demands?
Join CXC exhibitors Coni Yovaniniz and Rodrigo Vargas, with cartoonists Aaron Polk and others, for a discussion on the CXC Discord server. Launched in 2020 with the first online CXC and continued with the hybrid festival in 2021, the Discord server became a place for creative people of all backgrounds to participate. Trust emerged rapidly, and several of the cartoonists on the server collaborated in the Tid-Bits! zine (tidbitzine.com/). This food-themed anthology was sold at CXC 2021 with all proceeds donated to Neighborhood Services Inc (NSI) Food Pantry, a central Ohio charity dedicated to serving hungry individuals in the area (nsifoodpantry.org/).
The CXC Discord server started as a way to keep the festival going when gathering in person was impossible. But the community that grew within proved that tools like Discord offer additional accessibility and support, even as we once again meet in physical spaces. Moderator Jerzy Drozd, CXC’s Interim Executive Director in 2020/2021, will interview some of the mission-driven people who made the CXC Discord special.
