In 1944, the US War Department was asked by the War Refugee Board to consider bombing the gas chambers and Crematoriums at the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. The War department listed 5 reason why an attack would not be feasible. This included: Target is too far from bases in UK and the mission would be unescorted, diversion of bombing recourses from industrial targets is not justified to supporting ending the war, no parallel can be drawn to the RAF attack at Amiens, and bombing would cause prisoner causalities.
