In this photo deconstruction, I explore a stunning avant-garde makeup look created by Joanne Guerre, known for her artistic brilliance in body paint. Using three lights, I aimed to highlight the makeup's vivid colors and intricate textures, balancing creative lighting with minimal in-camera effects to accentuate the artist's original vision.
What does Avant-garde mean?
"Avant-garde style photography" refers to a type of photography that explores unconventional and innovative approaches to capturing beauty. It often involves experimental techniques, unusual compositions, and artistic interpretations that challenge traditional norms and push boundaries in beauty aesthetics. This style aims to evoke thought, emotion, and a sense of uniqueness in the viewer, often departing from mainstream or conventional beauty photography.

💡Lighting (3)
1. Main Light: Beauty dish with a grid for flattering, controlled illumination.
2. Background Light: 5' octabox with a teal blue gel, positioned to create a high-key background effect.
3. Fill Light: 1x4' strip softbox with a cyan blue gel, used to fill in shadows and cool down overall tones.
🖌 Post Processing
1. Contrast Adjustment: Adding contrast to enhance depth and definition in the image.
2. White Balance: Cooling down the white balance slightly to achieve a desired color tone.
3. Desaturation: Adjusting saturation levels, particularly for skin tones, to achieve a balanced overall color palette.
4. Retouching: Minor retouching to refine details such as cleaning up lines and adjusting textures without altering the fundamental makeup design.
These steps were carried out using Capture One software, leveraging the flexibility of raw image editing to achieve the desired final look.
