Seamless backgrounds are probably one of my most used items in the studio. I love using them to create supersaturated scenes either with a specific color or with a gray background that can soak up gels and create interesting effects, however sometimes it can get a bit repetitive.
So what can you do about that?
In this case, I thought, maybe I could layer multiple seamless backgrounds together to create more of a set and graphic effect, something out of the ordinary.
The execution was pretty simple. I setup a Savage Universal Plum background and then put up a Canary Yellow one across that to create an interesting set piece that also complimented the model's outfit and matched the clothing to the environment.
One of the things to keep in mind while building a set or planning a photoshoot is that there is no “right” answer, it all depends on the intention.
So when you’re trying to think outside the box and create something a bit different, let those ideas flow and experiment!
For the light we decided because of the vertical seamless across the background, it might be interesting to contrast that by creating a vertical beam of light down the middle for the model to step in.
To create this effect I used an Optical Spot since it gives me ultimate control for creating tight pockets of light. I also added a large umbrella with diffusion to help lift the shadows a bit.
The end result was something different and not the typical use of a backdrop. It’s all about thinking outside the box to create something interesting.
