Crater Lake in the central Cascade Mountains of Washington State is a charming but seldom-visited destination. There is no maintained trail to the lake, and the route was originally constructed by miners and fishermen. Although the lake is just over a mile from the trailhead, route-finding and bushwhacking skills are needed. It is advisable not to wear your best clothing, as it may get torn and muddy like ours did. The lake occupies a subalpine basin and offers pleasant views of the cliffs and ridges of the surrounding peaks. There is a nice camping spot next to the outflow, and rock slides stretch down to the shoreline in places. There are not many lakes where you may have the opportunity to spend a popular summer weekend all by yourself, but this is one of them.
