Growing up in south Louisiana, I've gotten to work with cottonmouths more than most other snakes. Being the only sub aquatic pit viper in the world, their behaviors and attitude are fairly unique, even compared to other vipers. There's a lot of myth and folklore surrounding these snakes, so today, we're going to be checking out ALL the different shapes, sizes, colors, and subspecies of cottonmouths we can find, and observing for ourselves: Are these snakes ACTUALLY aggressive towards people? As always we hope y'all enjoy this video! :D
I'm used to working primarily with western cottonmouths (also referred to as northern cottonmouths in many areas of their range) however, in this video, we show how this species varies in appearance based on location, age, and subspecies. We go to see all three subspecies (the wester, eastern, and Florida) in this video, as well as a few water snake species, to help those viewing this video better identify the snakes defining features, as they may not all look the same. Cottonmouths are a pit viper species, meaning they have heat seeking pits, and very large venom glands. If you ever stumble upon one of these snakes in the wild, do your best to leave the snake alone, and they'll do their best to avoid you entirely.
