The COSMIC Desktop is getting a major visual upgrade. System76 has previewed a new Frosted Glass UI effect coming in COSMIC Epoch 2, designed to deliver modern transparency and blur without hurting performance or battery life.

Unlike traditional heavy Gaussian blur, COSMIC uses a Dual Kawase blur, commonly seen in gaming, to keep the desktop fast and efficient. Best of all, this frosted glass effect is fully optional and customizable, letting users control transparency and intensity — or disable it completely.

COSMIC is already the default desktop in Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS, and these upcoming enhancements show how System76 is balancing performance, gaming, and clean design while building a desktop environment from scratch.
