Conveyor Magazine is a semi-annual publication dedicated to eliminating the hierarchy between emerging and established artists. The magazine includes a series of new photography projects, interviews, articles and essays by writers and artists who strive to bring new ideas on photography to light. The publication also invites artists to submit work through a free and open call for submission based on a theme for each issue!
Earlier this year Conveyor Magazine launched its inaugural issue with an exhibition and launch party in an artist-run gallery in Manhattan. The exhibition was only on view for four days, but the events successfully brought together a sense of community and excitement for the ideas and artists represented our publications and projects. As soon as it was over, we knew we wanted to do it again, but this time we need help with funding the exhibition and events!

This November, Conveyor Magazine will release its second issue on the theme of Mapping! We plan to organize an exhibition in an artist-run gallery in Manhattan, to print and produce the exhibition at Conveyor and to organize a series of artists' lectures, which will be free and open to the public. The goal of our Kickstarter project is for Conveyor Magazine to reach a broader audience, to expand our community and to provide artists with opportunities for exposure in the New York art world.
WHY IS CONVEYOR A PRINT MAGAZINE?
Photography is a medium that is rooted in print! Long before there were digital cameras, the final outcome of the medium was a tangible photograph, an image exposed onto a sheet of paper. We still believe that being able to see and hold photographs in your hand creates a binding and unique relationship between the work and the viewer. As new digital technologies continue to emerge, we embrace them and integrate them into our practices { for example the magazine is printed on a digital press and we promote a lively dialogue on photography and related topics in between issues on our blog } but we still maintain a strong and passionate commitment to the print as our final outcome.
HOW WILL CONVEYOR MAGAZINE USE THE MONEY?
The money raised through our Kickstarter project will be directly applied to renting a high-traffic gallery space for a week, printing and producing an exhibition, and offering honoraria to artists for their lectures, which will be free and open to the public. There will also be a preview event for the editors, artists, curators, educators, collectors and our Kickstarter supporters, to come out and see a preview of the show and meet new faces in our community!
The additional money will be applied to printing and producing extra copies of the magazine to be distributed to small bookstores, public libraries and educational institutions. This will help us reach a larger audience and further spread our ideas on photography, allowing us to acquire new supporters and subscribers! This will then help keep Conveyor Magazine alive for many issues to come.
WHY SHOULD I FUND THIS PROJECT?
By helping to fund our project, you can be part of an exciting new endeavor that has the potential to grow into an exciting and influential resource on the medium of print and photography.
Conveyor is currently run by an all-volunteer staff and, we are in the process of obtaining our non-profit status. All of our projects, especially the magazine, are a labor of love.
We have a wonderful team of editors, contributors, and interns who all work for free to bring new ideas and projects in photography to light. We'd also love to note, that our brilliant team maintains day jobs at such places as the Museum of Modern Art, The New Yorker, and the International Center of Photography. In the future we hope to be able to compensate and continue working with the talented people who make the magazine and its events possible!
A LITTLE MORE ABOUT CONVEYOR
Conveyor Arts is an organization dedicated to supporting photographic-based artists through production, exhibition and publication of new work in the medium. Our resources include a 10,000 sq ft of print and production space in Hoboken, New Jersey, where we run a fine art printing studio, bookmaking facilities, an exhibition space and a publication label.
Conveyor is just over one-year old, and in our short time we have organized ten solo and group exhibitions, published several books and a magazine under the Conveyor publishing label and provided many artists with the ability to print, produce, and self-publish their work. With your help we can continue to provide these resources and circulate new ideas on photography!
