I convert part of my garage into an insulated model train room. I use 70 x 35mm structural pine to frame the room from the inside. This provides a cavity for insulation batts and a flat surface for fixing gyprock plasterboard. The concrete is treated with a rubberised pond liner to ensure no moisture can enter the room through the floor, then it's covered with 500mm rubber backed carpet squares.
The pelmet light is made from a strip of pine and held to the wall with 90 degree brackets. Underneath this is a strip of yellowtongue structaflor flooring that the 11.5w LED strip lighting channel is screwed into. The light strips are mounted at a distance from the wall to minimise shadows being cast from objects in the model scene.
The plasterboard is painted in mid and dark grays so the colourful model railway scenery pops out when it is added later. The darker gray above the pelmet lighting adds more of a widescreen feel which will help the model railway feel bigger in the room.
