In this video, I show how I used a 4-pole, 3-position rotary switch to control four turnout motors across two parallel tracks on my N scale model railway. With just one knob, I can select between three route combinations — allowing trains to pass straight through or cross between tracks with minimal wiring and a tidy control panel.
You’ll see how the switch logic works, how I avoid circuit leakage, and how I designed a custom laser-etched panel to bring it all together. I also walk through how to wire LED route indicators, explain negative-side switching, and show the full wiring in action.
Whether you're building your first layout module or upgrading your control systems, this walkthrough will give you practical ideas and techniques to try.
📌 What you'll learn:
- How to wire 4 turnout motors with a single rotary switch
- How turnout motors (MTB MP1) work and switch frog polarity
- Using negative-side switching in a 12V DC layout
- Designing a clean, labelled control panel from sketch to laser etch
- Using colour-coded diagrams to simplify wiring
