The rocks on the left of the diagonal quartz fault line originated in Laurentia. The rocks to the right originated in Avalonia. They merged during the Caledonian orogeny about 400 million years ago. This is part of the evidence of an ocean closure that preceded the Atlantic ocean by about 200 million years.
