Used to be a stately home for a minor branch of the all-Northumbria-powerful Percy family It went the way of all those stately homes that relied too much on low-paid servant staff. After some years of ruin it was acquired by the Madyama Kadampa Buddhists and is now a spiritual centre. A better use than housing the aristobuggracy I'd say.
Turns out it did not play a role in the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536, though they marched on the Wold behind, and restored the small Priories of Nunburnholme and Warter.
