NJ Transit GP40PH-2B No. 4208 shoves a Pascack Valley Line train out of Teterboro Station in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey on January 26, 2025. The train passes through WEST SACK, an interlocking guarding one end of a passing siding. This locomotive was built in 1968 as Penn Central GP40 No. 3191 and continued on into Conrail with the same number. It was eventually rebuilt for passenger service for NJ Transit and remains in service with the agency to this day. The locomotive was rebuilt into a Conrail heritage livery in the autumn of 2024.

On this date 50 years ago, the Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail) officially began operations. To commemorate fifty years since the creation of this storied eastern United States railroad, I’ll be posting Conrail photos and videos throughout the month of April. This will include equipment that I documented still wearing Conrail liveries, equipment of Conrail heritage, Conrail infrastructure, and “heritage” or preserved equipment that continues to tell the Conrail story into the present day.
