The human heart is an excitable system in which travelling waves orchestrate the muscle contraction. These action potentials can form rotating spirals (reentrant waves) that have been linked to tachycardia. For the parameters used in this simulation, spiral waves are not stable but break up giving rise to complex, turbulent patterns. This specific model was originally proposed by Bueno-Orovi, Cherry, and Fenton.
