Biomorphs are fully inorganic microstructures that slowly form when a solution of barium chloride and sodium silicate reacts with carbonate ions. In the simplest case, the carbonate can result from the influx of carbon dioxide from the surrounding air. This video is obtained by optical microscopy and shows the growth of a polycrystalline double helix.
