In this video we see what needs to be done to this Compaq Presario CQ5700f and a friend's bargain-basement gaming PC to get them both working.
I never did need to reinstall Windows 7 on that gaming PC. All I needed to do was run a disk check from another computer, then amazingly enough, startup repair actually fixed it the rest of the way. It hasn't given issues since, but it's never exactly a great sign when an OS gets corrupted like that and viruses/malware aren't present.
