Comet 3I/ATLAS appeared in Vera C. Rubin Observatory images before astronomers even knew it had been discovered—and one detail in the newly released picture genuinely surprised me.

Rubin first photographed this interstellar visitor on June 21, 2025, ten days before its official discovery on July 1, 2025. The observatory continued recording it through July, capturing the development of its coma and an unusual apparent Sun-facing feature.
