🔴 **BREAKING: A powerful M7.4 earthquake has struck Colombia**, sending strong shaking across a huge portion of the country and triggering emergency response operations in multiple cities.
The earthquake struck near **San José del Palmar in Chocó Department** and originated approximately **107 km (66 miles) underground**. That depth is one of the most important parts of this earthquake.
This was not a shallow rupture of the main megathrust. The earthquake occurred deep within the **subducting Nazca Plate beneath South America**, where the oceanic plate is descending beneath the continent.
In this video, I break down:
🌎 The location and epicenter of the **M7.4 Colombia earthquake**
📍 Why **San José del Palmar and Chocó** are important
⬇️ Why the extraordinary **107 km depth** matters
🌊 The **Nazca Plate and South American Plate** subduction system
📈 Why the preliminary magnitude changed as seismic networks analyzed more data
🏙️ Shaking reported across Colombia, including **Bogotá, Cali, Pereira, Manizales, Quibdó and surrounding areas**
🏗️ Developing reports of structural damage and emergency inspections
✈️ Transportation and airport impacts being assessed
📡 The **Cauca seismic cluster** and Colombia's history of intermediate-depth earthquakes
⚡ How today's earthquake compares with previous major earthquakes in this region
🔴 Aftershocks and what scientists will be watching next
Because this earthquake occurred deep underground, seismic energy was capable of traveling across a very large region. We will examine the seismic data, maps, depth, tectonic setting and incoming reports to understand exactly what happened.
⚠️ **IMPORTANT:** This is a rapidly developing event. Preliminary earthquake magnitudes, casualty numbers, damage assessments, aftershock information and other details can be revised as Colombian authorities, USGS and other scientific agencies receive additional data.
For official emergency information, always follow local Colombian authorities and emergency-management agencies.
