Science nerds WOULD be the ones to invent a revolutionary technology just to make sure there was more coffee in the break room
Webcams were invented three and a half decades ago for the sole purpose of nerds at Cambridge University to check and see if there was bean juice in their coffee pot
Before the purple streaming site where we give away free PCs, and before the internet in general - this jerry-rigged webcam set in the Trojan Room on campus from 1991 to 2001, had a resolution of just 128 by 128 pixels, and was entirely grayscale
Since this was before the world wide web, it was connected directly to the facility’s local network, and was basically normal camera fed through an old capture card that took three photos per minute that’d be refreshed on a server-side Window System protocol app that allowed whoever was logged into the network to check in on the brown water levels
