A playthrough of Sega's 1992 interactive movie for the Sega CD, Cobra Command.
Played on the normal difficulty level.
Cobra Command was a launch game for the Sega CD in North America, releasing in October of 1992 alongside Night Trap, Sol-Feace, and a couple Make My Video titles. It's a conversion of Thunder Storm, a 1984 LaserDisc-based arcade game from Data East that featured animation from Toei. This version was produced by Wolf Team and licensed to Sega through Renovation.
You are the pilot of the Super Cobra helicopter, and it's up to you to save the world from terrorists over the course of ten stages. The gameplay consists of aiming your crosshairs at incoming threats and blasting away, and occasionally steering your chopper around whatever you can't shoot your way through. Since everything is driven by FMV, the key to winning is memorizing the sequence of triggers required to clear each stage, just like in youtu.be/yKSwYP_oYS0.
The picture and sound quality is leagues behind the LaserDisc version, but it provided enough of a spectacle to draw people's attention in 1992. The animated FMV clips exhibit fewer obvious compression artifacts than you saw in games that incorporated live-action footage, the framerate is generally sufficient to convey the necessary sense of motion, and the audio is clear enough to keep the voices intelligible in the mix against the music and the nonstop stream of punchy gun fire and explosion effects.
Cobra Command was an impressive early showpiece for the Sega CD, and it's still a fun way to squander a few hours thanks to its energetic pace, slick art, and relatively forgiving level of difficulty. I liked it quite a bit.
