#CEOAS researcher Greg Wilson and team are testing new sensors that track the motion of cobble-sized rocks on the coast.
Cobbles appear on beaches all along the Pacific Northwest, often concentrated near basaltic headlands like Yaquina Head. Cobbles are also sometimes added to beaches to help protect them from wave action, as an alternative to more invasive seawalls or rip-rap.
Greg's work aims to better understand how often and how far cobble-sized rocks move along the shore and what that means for shoreline change. The research will help improve these coastal protection strategies, so they can be used more effectively and sustainably!
