On the evening of February 7, 2022, an MH-60 Jayhawk Helicopter (CG-6036) launched from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka in response to a mayday call from the fishing vessel GLORY, a 40-foot trawler rapidly taking on water with two people on board.

The aircrew navigated across rugged terrain through a violent winter storm with tropical storm-force winds (39 to 73 mph) to locate the GLORY being battered by waves against jagged rocks.

The pilots fought tirelessly to control the aircraft and avoid the 80-foot trees and the vessel’s rigging while conducting hoists to recover both fishermen and the rescue swimmer.

After the recovery, the storm was so fierce that the crew could only rely on radar navigation and their aeronautical skills to successfully fly CG-6036 back to Air Station Sitka.

Bravo Zulu to Lieutenant Commander Michael Haas, Lieutenant Commander Scott Woodcock, Aviation Maintenance Technician Second Class Andrew Thomas, and Aviation Survival Technician First Class Shane Moore for their courageous life-saving efforts!
