CDR Anne O’Connell was deployed to the North Arabian Gulf from 2008 to 2009 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. At the same time, her mother, Lt. Col. Mary O’Connell, was deployed to Iraq as a combat trauma nurse in the U.S. Army. This powerful experience strengthened her resolve to address veterans’ issues in The White House Domestic Policy Council as a White House Fellow. The U.S. Coast Guard has placed eight Fellows in the past ten years—six of them women! Over the next several weeks, we’ll continue to highlight women who have served in this highly-competitive and prestigious program. All Coast Guard members are encouraged to apply.
