C&O #1309: Winter on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad 2-18/19-2023.
In the Winter of 2023, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR) operated two weekends of excursions behind their rather newly restored steam locomotive: ex. Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) 2-6-6-2 "Mallet" #1309. During the second weekend in January, the 1309 ran four excursions from Cumberland to Frostburg. During about a three-week period, the locomotive was temporarily repainted into her original C&O livery for a few upcoming photography charters in February. After the last photo charter was complete, the WMSR decided to leave the C&O paint on for the weekend of excursions. Seeing as the charters sold out very quickly and the locomotive normally is in the Western Maryland "fireball" paint, we decided to make our way up the WMSR to see this very rare occasion. We did not regret it one bit.
*1309 had a guest whistle on this weekend. A Southern "long-bell" 3 chime presumably from a TS class 4-8-2 "Mountain" type.
*To clarify, the C&O paint was temporary for the charters and this weekend in particular, at the time of this production there are no plans for the locomotive to be repainted back into C&O colors. The only way this happened was because someone paid the railroad to paint it C&O for a few weeks.
Enjoy the sights and sounds of the 1309 as she travels the rugged terrain on the old Western Maryland! With a little Southern flavor.
