The CNN segment points to polling showing that unfavorable views of Israel have risen sharply since 2022, with the shift especially strong among Americans under 50. The conversation then turns to Israeli-American historian Omer Bartov, who argues that Zionism changed from a Jewish liberation movement into a militaristic, expansionist, and oppressive state ideology.
I push back on that framing and explain why many anti-Israel academics seem deeply uncomfortable with Jewish strength, Jewish sovereignty, and Israel having the power to defend itself. I also discuss why the current “occupation” framework is unstable, why Israel needs a real long-term sovereignty strategy, and why the Palestinian statehood question continues to fuel endless conflict.
The second half of the segment gets into the growing split between America and Israel over Iran, Hezbollah, Lebanon, Trump, JD Vance, the Strait of Hormuz, and whether U.S. leaders should follow American public opinion if Americans no longer want to be deeply involved in Israel’s wars.
My argument is simple: Israel needs to become far more militarily self-sufficient, America should not be forced into wars its people do not support, and Israel cannot keep relying on American approval to do what it believes is necessary for its survival.
