Clydesdale horses pull the beer wagons into Oktoberfest in Munich Germany.
Traditional German beer wagons are drawn by Clydesdale horses bringing kegs of beer to Oktoberfest.
Special dray horses are used to pull beer barrels from the breweries to the festival to officially and symbolically begins the 16 days of “Wiesn”.
These days only a hand full of breweries use horses to get the beer in the traditional way to Octoberfest.
When this special time of the year arrives the beer drivers exchange their standard uniforms with Lederhosen and become the drivers of the drays.
Drayman are expected to take care of the working horses.
Draymen sleep in shifts during the night so someone has an eye on the animals.
They start training their horses in spring by playing German folk music in the stables to let the horses get used to all the noises. It is a requirement that the horses stay calm and get used to the festival and the busy surroundings.
The festival of Wiesn originated in October, 1810 to celebrate the marriage of the Prince of Bavaria to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.
