A one-season precursor to 'Space:1999', 'UFO' (1970) established the existence of a base on the moon (it would blast off into space during two seasons of '1999'). A covert operation called SHADO (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation) is doing battle with aliens who are abducting earthlings left and right. The series only lasted one season, but the purple hair was memorable. Gerry Anderson fave Barry Gray composed an A-1 opener for the show, but the end credits were something of a letdown.
