Ford referred to the rear axle, generally, as removable carrier or integral carrier. We enthusiast have added the ring gear size to further winnow down the types.
Shorthand for the rest of us is:
9 inch, 8 inch (removable carrier) 7.5 inch (integral)
Ford did this with axle tags. If you are lucky enough to have a Ford axle that has not been messed with there will be an axle tag attached to one of the studs on the axle housing.

Ford also had a 9.75 rear axle that was used on later full sized Fords.
Did you know that Ford actually had a 7 3/4 (2.80 Falcon, Mustang and even 1967 Cougar) and an 8 3/4 inch ring gear that were considered part of the integral carrier 8-inch line through the mid sixties?
First and last
• 9 inch was first introduced in 1957 in the Fairlane.
• The 7.5 was introduced in 1960 model year in the new Falcon
• The 8 inch in 1962 in the redesigned Fairlane.
Strongest to weakest
Obviously the 9-inch axle is the strongest of the bunch. It is used in almost every level of Motorsports across the United States and the world.
The 8-inch is the next strongest axle with the ability to handle anywhere from 350 to 400 horsepower depending on how you drive. At the 400 horsepower mark, drag slicks are not your friend.
Aside from never being available with a five lug pattern the 7.5-inch ring gear integral carrier axle is the weakest of the bunch and will not withstand much horsepower at all. In fact if you are doing a hot 6 cylinder I would recommend upgrading to a Ford 8-inch rear axle.
Remember that sticky tires are the easiest way to find the weak link in your driveline.
Things to know:
Best way to tell if it is a 9 inch is the access to the bottom bolt on the carrier. If you can use a ratchet, it is not a 9 inch. The reason this is a good test is that the axle housing changed from smooth cover to dimpled cover sometime in 1965. Also, the 1957 to 1966 used a case oil fill, in 1967 Ford went to a carrier fill.
Ford did the same thing to the 8 inch sometime in 1966 foing from a case fill to a carrier fill.
The reason this is important is when buying a carrier. You can use a later carrier fill integral case with an early housing, but you can’t use an early carrier with a later carrier fill case.

By now you might have seen the new ad for Jaguar. I knew something was up when my 15 year old asked me if Id seen it.
As a former art director and graphic designer I knew this thing was a rocket.
Most of my friends that are into cars and about 3/4 of the car community shows on you tube have been buzzing about it because its such a hot topic. Im hearing people talk about woke agendas, insularity advertising, wheres the effing car, you name it.
By common advertising standards the commercial is weird. And not because of the 9 o’clock hair cut, jarring red and yellow color pallet or lack of any sign of a car. They smack you with create exuberant. And, where IS the effing car. If you are a car company you sell cars.
In 1922 the car company wasnt even a car company it was actually a company that made sidecars for motorcycles and was called Swallow Sidecar. In 1945 Jaguar finally became Jaguar. Starting in the late 1940s, the company focused its production on luxury performance vehicles—a market that was not being tapped. Some of the earliest actual Jaguar vehicles included the Jaguar XK120, XK140, and the classic Jaguar E-TYPE. In the late 50s and 1960s Jaguar became a Top Line Executive Car in Britain. And for a very long time in Britannia the car you drove said a lot about what your status was in the business community in the UK—Jaguar was part of that legacy.
So, what was Gerry McGovern, Chief Creative Officer, thinking with the recent Copy Nothing ad? And believe me, this was thought out and planned. Gerry is a smart man with letters after his name (a big deal in the UK). Was it Jaguars marketing teams intent to just cause a stir? To knock the aging market off its comfy chair and seat an edgy upstart in it’s place? The running wag is that any press is good press and, boy howdy is there press right now. Enough that a 15 year old feels the need to ask me if I had seen the ad. In that sense the ad is working. Weve seen you Jaguar, in a way we havent noticed you in the last 40 years. The problem is, is it effective? Does a person in a bright pink outfit and another in a nine o’clock haircut scream upper tier executive in Britain? More importantly, does Jaguar care about it’s narrowing and aging market?
I dont think so. I think that Gerry etal are swinging for the fences. But why? Batteries.
According to the Guardian, in February of this year:
The Indian conglomerate Tata has confirmed Bridgwater in Somerset [UK] as the site of its new £4bn [5 billion US dollars] battery factory, which will bring about 4,000 jobs to the region. Tatas battery business, Agratas, said it had bought land at the Gravity Smart campus off the M5, just outside the town.
I feel the change in direction for Jaguar, who will be all EV by 2025, has more to do with the parent company moving a battery plant to the UK than anything else. It give Tata a brand to hang the EV hat on. And why bother keeping the old fans around if all you are going to do is abandon gasoline power? Jaguar is just big enough and storied enough that it makes a big splash to do a weird ad and then release a wicked looking EV car a few weeks later.
This is a bold move. But is it smart? Toyota is pushing hydrogen, Tesla is leaking money, and many manufacturers are backing off of EV due to sluggish demand. And that boils down to ease of use: You can’t fill up a battery as quick as a load of gasoline or diesel.
What does that mean for Jaguar? I think it means Tata has a brand new battery plant on the way in Bridgewater, Somerset.
With new cars harder to work on Advance is attepting to get in front of dropping sales with slashing stores and distribution centers.

![Bad Gauge? Bad Sender? Bad Ground? How To Tell The Difference
Running out of gas in a classic car is embarrassing. Running out of gas because your fuel gauge quit working is fixable — and on any Ford from about 1960 through 1973, that gauge is a perennial troublemaker.
In this one, Jeff walks through the full diagnostic chain on the 72 Mach 1 (Lazarus) without ever pulling the instrument cluster out of the dash. First, the embarrassing one: check that the sender is actually plugged in. Then the real testing begins.
What we cover:
• Why a test light beats a multimeter for checking gauge feed (youre looking for that pulse at roughly 5 to 5.5 volts, and a meter wont show it)
• Where to ground your test light when youre flat on hot asphalt
• Jumping the two posts to confirm the gauge itself has good mechanical function — it should sweep past empty and peg past full
• Identifying the ground post on the sender (furthest from the front of the car), and how 71 strap-in tanks differ from bolt-in tanks
• Running an ohms test on the sender: roughly 72–75 ohms empty, around 10 ohms full on a Ford
• What an OL reading means versus a steady 73 ohms — one says the rheostat is toast, the other points at a fuel-logged float
Spoiler: this sender is dead. The good news is National Parts Depot now produces their own sending unit, so the fix is a phone call and four gallons of gas siphoned out of the tank.
