Venetan is one of several minor languages spoken in Italy, all of which are steadily declining in number of active speakers
Venetan is spoken in an area in north-eastern Italy, but also numbers varieties in Croatia, Slovenia and several areas in South America. Particularly noteworthy is a Brazilian variety called Talian, which numbers 500,000 speakers
This dubbing uses the so-called Central variety of Venetan: the most widely spoken of the six main varieties of Venetan spoken in Italy
Venetan does not have an officially standardised orthography. I chose to use as a guideline the indications provided by Veneto Region: linguaveneta.net/lingua-veneta/grafia-veneta-ufficiale
I thus decided to use ⟨ł⟩ to transcribe that sound that oscillates between an /e/ and an /l/ depending on the variety of Venetan. I decided to use it in every instance where the sound may vary in other varieties of the language (given how volatile this sound is), regardless of how it’s pronounced in this song, in this specific variety
I also decided to use ⟨z⟩ and ⟨s⟩ for the corresponding /z/ and /s/ sounds respectively, discarding the historical graphemes ⟨x⟩ for the former and ⟨ç⟩ and ⟨z⟩ for the latter. I elected to do so because I think it’s less confusing both to speakers and non-speakers of the language. Yes, ditching ⟨x⟩ was a suffered decision. One I made with a heavy heart. But in the end, I’m one for clear, intuitive orthography, and the one I went for is imo just much clearer than the historical one
