During these trying and uncertain times, we have been trying to spread a little bit of love and movie magic by showcasing some of our favourite moments in film.
In this week's Cinemoments, we want to amplify the legendary voice of The Empress of the Blues herself, Bessie Smith. This moment is taken from her performance of the titular song in 1929’s ST. LOUIS BLUES.
The 16 minute long, two-reel short is one of the earliest films featuring synchronised sound. This scene features Smith in an African-American speakeasy during the Prohibition era, singing the W. C. Handy standard, ‘St. Louis Blues’. It is the only film featuring the hugely influential singer, who helped to pioneer the genre of Blues music and propel it into popular culture.
