For the first time ever, Auckland Palace, the Seat of Power for The Prince Bishops of Durham in Bishop Auckland, have opened up the Palace for a first ever, Christmas at the Palace. With 12 rooms spectacularly decorated, including the State Rooms, St Peter’s Chapel and the Private Apartments complete with stunning artworks and furnishings, sprinkled with a touch of Christmas magic. Traditional decorations, befitting of the Prince Bishops who once ruled from this ancient seat of power. The Long Dining Room with golden plates of frosted fruits, sparkling crystal and plush velvet garlands, accompanying the 13 Spanish Portraits of Jacob and his 12 sons, which adorn the walls, while a splendid peacock takes centre stage in the Breakfast Room.
You can also see the magnificent 18th-century Neapolitan Nativity on display in the Faith Museum - Christmas at the Palace is a tour full of festive delights and is not to be missed.
We come back on the evening for the AGLOW Light Trail, which is one of the best Christmas light trails in the North East with 22 incredible displays and one of the largest light installations in the country - AGLOW is a must-see experience for all the family. We finish off the night with a walk around the fabulous Bishop Auckland Christmas Market and Fayre, where the town’s historic market square is transformed into a winter wonderland, where you can enjoy Ice Skating, Christmas Market, Santa’s Grotto, live performances, a Giant Tipi Bar and so much more – festive fun for all the family!
