Helvellyn The Safe Way with My Grandson, Harry Metalman! We park at Swirls car park, next to Thirlmere and take the direct 2 mile route straight up to the summit of Helvellyn. We finally got the promised full sun and were rewarded with spectacular views over Red Tarn all the way down to Ullswater. After a break at the summit shelter, we took the path down to Wythburn Car Park, Thirlmere and then the (long) 2 mile walk back to Swirls car park through the woods. This route avoids any edges and any drops and is (imo) the safest way to climb Helvellyn.
