Another valve guitar amplifier demo: this Choobie 2 has the same valve line up as the Selmer Little Giant or Watkins Clubman, although the circuit is slightly different from these to avoid copyright issues. In the Hoofbags engineering department (me, in my shed as opposed to being in here where our computer is) we think it sounds every bit as good as both of these 50s - 60s models. Studying the schematics for these early amps, it is easy to figure out what the original designers were trying to achieve so we try to improve on them with bigger and individually selected components. When an amp is mass produced the same value component will be used as the schematic specifies in its position in every individual chassis. By fine tuning the values to match the characteristics of every other component we can obtain system optimisation. This can't be done in a mass production environment, it would take too long. This Choobie 2 has a 2 transistor fuzz circuit, internally powered. There is a switched bass control with 6 positions, three are with a capacitance only eq. and three others that consist of a capacitance/inductance network. 6 positions in total. It's possible to get a very extreme bass cut on the amp using the switching option which will, if used with a zvex hard-on pre-amp for example, will cut through the band on stage mix and project to the audience. The output is only 6 watt, so it can't be expected to perform like a Fender twin reverb or a Vox AC30. The Choobie 2 would suit a student guitarist or a person who simply plays for pleasure at home. As is standard on Hoofbags amps, there is a facility provided enabling the user to re-connect to a larger cab: 2.5 - 8 ohms. Speaker matching is 3 ohms. Naturally, if stage use is desired, a mike in front of it can be placed, that can be coupled into a PA system's mixer.
