Cho Ren Sha 68K was a Doujin (Indie) shmup released nearly 30 years ago on the X68000 series of Japanese computers, hence the "68K" in it's name. Thankfully we don't need to dig up that old platform (or emulate it) in order to play as a stellar Windows port is available and has been updated multiple times over the years. Out of seemingly nowhere the latest version (1.10) was released and adds more detailed backgrounds and an actual ending to this nearly 30 year old game.

The games is basically a 2 loop fast paced shooter where lives and bombs are plentiful. Oh and you also get a shield powerup to take an extra hit. Each level has a number of powerup carries that drop a trio of items that you can collect. You can either grab 1 of the items or hover in between all 3 for a certain amount of time to collect them all at once.

This is the essence of the scoring system as once you max your various powerups, the items simply turn into score bonuses which increase in points with each additional pickup up to a max of 25.6K per item. After every 1 million points you score, one of the items in the next carrier will be a 1UP. Don't screw up this pickup as if you miss it, it will not be in the next carrier until you score another 1 mil.

The game also has 2 loops with the only change being the addition of some revenge bullets on both normal enemies and bosses. That is really the only difference besides having a new final boss at the very end of loop 2.

The music is pretty catchy and while the graphics are fairly generic, they get the job done. I think the main appeal of the game is it's accessibility and how lenient it is with lives and bombs. Getting high scores basically comes down to pickuping up all the item triads and not getting hit ever.

Overall, it's a fun game that I would recommend but at the same time I probably won't be playing much more outside of perhaps the hard mode.
