Chinese state-sponsored hackers allegedly infiltrated U.S. government computer networks, including systems tied to the Justice Department, NASA, the Federal Reserve and the Senate, before U.S. authorities moved to shut down web domains linked to the cyber group, according to federal officials.
The Justice Department and FBI announced the seizure of multiple domains connected to the Chinese state-sponsored hacking group QTFY. An FBI special agent wrote in a newly released affidavit that since 2018, the group had succeeded in breaching multiple networks, including at the Justice Department, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Energy.
FBI Director Kash Patel shared details Wednesday about the alleged activity, writing on social media, “These tools were used by PRC cyber actors to hide the origin of their attacks.” “This is something that's been happening for many years and in this case this was sponsored, this is state sponsored and this is a major national security issue for the U.S," U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche also told Fox News.
According to the affidavit, the hackers infiltrated government systems between 2018 and 2026, targeting not only top federal networks but also those operated by hospitals, telecommunications providers, power companies, financial institutions and defense contractors.
