Immigration and Customs Enforcement is highlighting new arrests as some state and local governments move to limit cooperation with the agency.
In New York, a state law banning cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE agents went into effect Tuesday. The law ends a 287g agreement that allowed ICE to use local police for enforcement.
“Local cops can no longer be deputized to participate in disorderly raids that too often descend into chaos and violence,” said New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul. “As I said at the top, local police will assist ICE only if a real crime has been committed, but on civil immigration matters, ICE is on their own.”
Hochul said she was confident the law would hold up if local jurisdictions tried to sue. Her Republican opponent in the governor’s race, Bruce Blakeman, Nassau County’s executive, said the county is weighing its options.
Mostly Democrat-led local and state governments have been attempting to curb ICE operations as the Trump administration crackdown continues.
The Department of Homeland Security announced 1,300 arrests around Washington, D.C., including parts of Virginia and Maryland, after a two-week operation.
In Maryland, some sheriffs have criticized Gov. Wes Moore’s ban on ICE cooperation.
“Maryland has decided it wants to be an ultra-sanctuary jurisdiction and passed terrible laws that we saw last session, ending our 287 agreement. Maryland has done its best to put up roadblocks to allow us to cooperate, to keep these people in our community,” said Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler.
